James makes it onto the NI Talent Development Programme!

8 Oct 2015

It's been a fantastic couple of months for James Reid, one of Murakwai & Northern Ireland Judo's top talents!

In August James travelled to the Eastern Area's British ranking event in Norwich where he not only won his junior category but also won his first senior British ranking event!

In winning both events at the Eastern Area event James became the first NI player to qualify for the 2016 Commonwealth Championships which are to be held in Port Elizabeth, South Africa next April.

In early September James travelled to Manchester as the NI Judo team's captain for Sainsbury's School Games where he had 5 fights and won them all by the maximum ippon score to win Northern Ireland's first ever Gold medal at the Games!

3 weeks after his School Games success, James won his 2nd Senior British Ranking event medal winning Silver at the North of England Championships in Bradford! This medal puts James just outside the top 16 in the Senior British ranking list, a great achievement for a 1st year junior...  At the North of England James also won Gold in the Juniors winning 4 fights out of 4 all by ippon!

To top it all off, James has just become the first NIJF player to make it on to the NI Talent Development Programme!  On this programme James will benefit from a bespoke performance programme with multi-disciplinary support provision designed by the NI Talent Development Coach.

Next for James is the Welsh Open in Cardiff in November where he will looking for another good performance to push him into the top 16 in Britain & earn selection for the Senior British Championships in December!
